MKA Planning have successfully represented existing pharmacies at Camlough, Newtownhamilton, Bessbrook and Cullyhanna in getting a proposed pharmacy refused at Belleeks, outside Newry at the Pharmacy National Appeals Panel. (NAP)
The NAP determined that there was no inadequacy in pharmaceutical provision within the defined neighbourhood. Pharmacies located outside the neighbourhood provided more than adequate services to the neighbourhood.
The Panel concluded that having to travel to one of the neighbouring towns to access pharmaceutical services is just one of the inconveniences of rural life. There is a very high car ownership level of 87% within the neighbourhood and a regular bus service to both Newtownhamilton and Camlough.
The Panel considered that younger people from the neighbourhood would normally access pharmacies after visiting the doctor. Elderly people from the neighbourhood are more likely to be on repeat prescriptions and have a free bus pass available.
